Ethnology and social anthropology has recently been characterised by considerable interest in theoretical and methodological issues and discussions (Ruby, 2005; Marcus, 2014; Holman Jones et al., 2016; Xygalatas, 2019) with a view to the fact that the theoretical and methodological approaches applied are not only unique for ethnology or social anthropology.
On the contrary, they are often “borrowed” from other social sciences. However, the use of a certain theoretical framework of social sciences in ethnological or anthropological research represents a specific form of adaptation to its needs. Such adaptation can lead to innovations in methodological approaches (Moore, 2005). This book aims to present and reflect on innovative research approaches in three selected ethnological research themes: the use of experiments with the aim of completing and extending ethnographic research, research on the functioning of organisations and reflexive writing, and collaborative approach in therapy and (auto)ethnography. It is intended for anthropologists, ethnologists and other social scientists who are keen to learn about selected theoretical and methodological approaches in ethnology and social anthropology of the last two decades. At the same time, the authors wish to contribute to the current academic debates in the field of research at home and abroad through research data from this region. The selection of themes and methods reflects primarily the research interests of the authors of the publication and is very diverse indeed. It shows the variability of possible approaches – from experiment as a “royal method” in positivist science up to the highly post-modern approach in the form of autoethnography and reflexive writing.
